Bank of Hawaii Offers Samsung Pay to Debit Card Consumers in Hawaii

Wednesday, July 13, 2016

HONOLULU, HAWAII - Bank of Hawaii now offers its debit card customers, with consumer accounts in the state of Hawaii, access to Samsung Pay, the mobile payment service from Samsung.

Samsung Pay utilizes tokenization technology, which substitutes sensitive account information with a unique, one-time transaction code for each purchase. Transactions are verified by fingerprint identification on the device, and the system does not store customer account information on the mobile device. Even if a retailer is breached, the customer’s data will be unusable.

“Technology permeates every aspect of our lives, and banking is no exception,” said David Oyadomari, Bank of Hawaii’s senior executive vice president of Digital Channels Division. “By enabling our Bank of Hawaii debit cards to be used in Samsung Pay, we not only provide a convenient way of making purchases for our customers, but offer them the added protection of safe and secure payment methods.”

With Samsung Pay, Bank of Hawaii debit card customers can add their Bank of Hawaii cards to their compatible Samsung devices—Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S6 active, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Note5—to pay for in-store purchases at participating stores nationwide. Combining Near Field Communication (NFC) with Samsung’s proprietary Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) technologies, Samsung Pay provides consumers a way to pay almost anywhere you can swipe or tap a card at millions of merchant locations. Samsung Pay is compatible with the majority of existing and new terminals, including most magnetic stripe, NFC and chip card enabled terminals.

Bank of Hawaii began offering Apple Pay™ to debit card customers in the state of Hawaii in March 2015, and began offering Android Pay to debit card customers in the state of Hawaii in July 2016.
