Dozens of Bank of Hawaii Employees Answer the Call to 'I Have a Dream' Campaign

HONOLULU, HAWAII – Close to 50 Bank of Hawaii volunteers teamed up today at the Waimaha Housing Complex in support of the Hawaii Public Housing Authority's "I Have a Dream" campaign, which seeks community involvement to fulfill some of the need for public housing refurbishment. The volunteers spent the day painting and cleaning 11 vacant units to assist in the housing needs for local families who need it most.
"We currently have thousands of families on the wait list for public housing, and in these hard economic times we simply can’t do it alone," said Hakim Ouansafi, executive director for HPHA. "These families have a dream of decent and safe housing. We're extremely grateful to the Bank of Hawaii volunteers for their support for this campaign, and for the time they’ve dedicated to help make that dream come alive for some of these families."
HPHA's "I Have a Dream" Campaign was announced on Martin Luther King Day as an effort to involve the community at large to immediately provide housing to those who need it most. This effort sought staff and volunteers during the month of February to help refurbish 150 units that could be easily repaired and offered to families to move in quickly.
This is the 10th time Bank of Hawaii employees have volunteered with HPHA to assist in bringing vacant units to occupancy standards.
The Waimaha Housing Complex has a total of 82 units in the low rise. It was built in 1979 and last remodeled in 2004.
HPHA is the only housing authority in the state. HPHA manages more than 6,000 units of state and federal low-income family and elderly public housing, with approximately 400 units identified in January as needing repair.
