Surf Shack Puzzles
Mahina Tuteur, Founder
Founded by Mahina Tuteur, Surf Shack Puzzles is a Native Hawaiian wahine-owned and ohana-operated puzzle company highlighting Hawaii-inspired artwork designed by female artists including Punky Aloha Studio and Aloha de Mele.
The local company’s puzzles are made from premium 100% recycled Eska board and printed with non-toxic inks. Plus a matte finish to reduce glare—like polarization for puzzles! Because they care about the health of our oceans and planet, Surf Shack Puzzles also donates a portion of their proceeds to marine conservation initiatives.
What was your experience like during the Bank of Hawaii mentorship program and what was the biggest takeaway you got from it?
The experience was fun and informative. My biggest takeaway was how important it is to have your finances in order for both sustainability and growth.
What does it mean to have a business in Hawaii?
It's definitely difficult to run a business in Hawaii, given high costs of shipping and everything else. But having your own business here at home also means you have the ability to make your own schedule, raise your family, and enjoy what makes Hawaii so special.
What do you need to make your business work?
The right systems in place, the ability to make decisions quickly and pivot when needed, flexibility, and of course a positive attitude.
What’s a business tip you learned from the program?
Getting organized and planning for the future is the foundation for success; profitability, scalability, and sustainability.
