Bank of Hawai‘i Announces New Senior Executive Vice President Damien Matthews, Executive Vice President Rina de Guzman and Senior Vice President Aaron Bierman

Damien Matthews recently joined Bank of Hawai‘i as senior executive vice president and senior executive director of The Private Bank, where he will set the enterprise direction for the bank’s private banking division, overseeing the delivery of integrated, high-touch banking and wealth solutions for high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clients.
Matthews brings more than 22 years of financial services experience to the role. Most recently, he served as vice chairman of Global Capital Markets at Morgan Stanley, where he was globally responsible for event-related hedging solutions and senior connectivity with institutional clients. Prior to that appointment, Matthews served as co-global head of Fixed Income Solutions, leading a team of more than 75 professionals across New York, Mexico City, São Paulo, London, Hong Kong and Tokyo.
Matthews also previously served as co-head of Fixed Income Capital Markets in the Americas at Morgan Stanley, where he supervised more than 100 professionals helping corporate clients finance their businesses in the investment-grade debt capital markets. Matthews was a member of Morgan Stanley’s Global Capital Markets Operating Committee and co-chaired the firm’s cross-divisional Deal Contingent Hedge Committee. In 2017, he was selected for the Morgan Stanley Leaders Program, a firm-wide program designed to advance and develop senior leaders. Before joining Morgan Stanley in 2004, Matthews was an analyst in Structured Products and Derivatives Marketing at JPMorganChase.
Matthews grew up in Hawai‘i and graduated from Punahou School. He earned his Master of Business Administration from Columbia University, graduating as valedictorian with the Academic Excellence Award, and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics, magna cum laude, from Harvard University. Matthews is a Chartered Financial Analyst and holds FINRA Series 7, 63 and 24 licenses.
Matthews joins Bank of Hawaiʻi in preparation for the retirement of Senior Executive Vice President and Senior Executive Director of The Private Bank Dana Takushi, who will retire in July after 32 years of dedicated service to the organization, where she led the transformation and modernization of The Private Bank and Kālai Services. This thoughtful leadership transition reflects the bank’s commitment to long-term, intentional succession planning, ensuring continued excellence and seamless continuity for The Private Bank’s clients and team members.

Rina de Guzman was recently promoted to executive vice president and chief audit executive from senior vice president at Bank of Hawai‘i. She leads the bank’s internal audit function helping to reinforce the organization’s strong governance frameworks.
De Guzman joined Bank of Hawai‘i in Oct. 2024 as senior vice president and technology risk & governance director, overseeing second line risk management across the bank’s IT environment. In that role, she partnered closely with the IT organization to further strengthen the bank’s IT risk and control frameworks. With more than 20 years of experience in internal audit, technology governance, risk management, and regulatory compliance, de Guzman was appointed chief audit executive in Feb. 2025. Prior to joining Bank of Hawai‘i, she began her career with Ernst & Young’s technology risk practice and later served in senior audit leadership roles at Cathay Bank, Pacific Western Bank, and TD Bank Group.
De Guzman earned her bachelor’s degree in business information technology from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and a Master of Communication Management from the University of Southern California. She holds an Adult Education and Instruction certification from George Brown College in Toronto, Canada, and is ISACA certified in Governance of Enterprise IT, Risk and Information Systems Control, and Information Systems Audit.

Aaron Bierman has joined Bank of Hawai‘i as senior vice president and director of foreign exchange sales, where he is responsible for driving foreign exchange–related fee income and revenue growth by originating, expanding and retaining FX business across the bank’s key lines of business, including Corporate, Commercial, Retail, Digital and Institutional Services. In his new role, Bierman will partner closely with relationship teams and internal stakeholders to strengthen client engagement, enhance FX capabilities and expand the bank’s product offerings in support of its broader strategic objectives.
Bierman has more than 25 years of financial services experience, with deep expertise in FX sales, client advisory and team leadership. He previously held senior FX leadership roles at MUFG Union Bank, JPMorgan Chase & Co., and Wells Fargo Bank, where he built and led high‑performing sales teams, consistently delivered strong revenue growth, and advised corporate and institutional clients on global markets, currency risk management, and hedging strategies. His experience includes a proven track record of growing FX businesses at scale, developing internal marketing and education initiatives, and partnering effectively across all operational areas of the business.
In addition to his financial services career, Bierman founded and led a successful entrepreneurial venture, further strengthening his perspective on strategic growth, marketing and client engagement.
Bierman holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Northeastern University. He is an active volunteer with Make-A-Wish® and the Surfrider Foundation.
