In response to the recent Kona low storms that caused widespread flooding and wind damage across the state, Bank of Hawaiʻi Foundation has pledged $325,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations providing direct relief and recovery assistance to impacted communities. The funding will support efforts that help families remain safely in their homes, addressing urgent housing-related needs as recovery efforts continue.
“Seeing the devastation caused by last month’s Kona low storms and the toll it has taken on our people and communities across Hawai‘i has made clear there is an urgent need,” said James Polk, Bank of Hawai‘i President & CEO. “While the path forward can feel overwhelming, we hope to ease some of that burden by supporting trusted community partners who are helping those most impacted to recover and rebuild.”
Grant recipients:
· Holomua Collective received $200,000 to support the Waialua/Haleʻiwa Owner‑Occupant Grant Program. Created in response to the 2026 Kona low storms, the program provides direct grants of $10,000 to owner‑occupants awaiting insurance funding for critical home repairs, helping families address immediate needs and remain safely housed.
· Hawaiʻi Community Foundation received $100,000 in support of the Stronger Hawaiʻi Fund. The statewide disaster and resilience fund provides flexible, rapid‑response funding to nonprofit partners across the islands, allowing resources to be deployed quickly where needs are greatest while also supporting longer‑term recovery and preparedness.
· Hawaiian Council received $25,000 to support Kākoʻo Oʻahu, an emergency relief effort assisting individuals and communities impacted by the recent severe weather. The initiative addresses evolving needs including housing stability services and direct financial assistance.
