Stewardship of the aina is born into the hearts of Waimea’s paniolo. Here, generations of cowboys have raised cattle on these fertile knolls as they balanced the needs of their herds with those of the land. In this digital artwork, the modern scene derives from a collection of artist Nakoa Camvel’s childhood memories of riding with his grandfather as well as the artist’s own pilina, his close personal connection to Waimea.

A replica of an ancient voyaging or fishing canoe which represents navigation, community, and teamwork as well as a nene goose figurine which represents Hawaii’s state bird are also featured in this piece.
