Honoring Hawaiʻi’s language, people, place and culture

We’re proud to uplift ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi every day. With that kuleana (responsibility and privilege), we are honored to share Mila’s moʻolelo in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi.

Ko mākou mo‘olelo (Our story)

At Bank of Hawaiʻi, our commitment to honoring Hawaiʻi's language, people, place and culture is rooted in respect and kuleana for our island home.

Our lā hānau mua (first birthday) TV commercial celebrates Mila and her ʻohana—her community—and all those who will continue to mālama (care for) her throughout her life. It reflects a way of living that is common in Hawaiʻi and truly special—one rooted in collective kuleana, mālama and aloha (love).

We are also featuring Mila’s story with English captions so everyone may share in the experience.

E Ola Ka ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Helping Hawaiian language thrive)

Since 2012, Bank of Hawaiʻi has offered the option of choosing ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi as one of the language choices on our ATMs throughout Hawaiʻi. The ʻokina was officially added to our logo in 2022, and together with our Nā ʻŌiwi Aloha Employee Resource Group, we are continuing to learn and use ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi within our organization.

In 2012, Bank of Hawai‘i became the first financial institution in Hawai‘i to add ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi to its ATM network.

Aloha for kaiāulu (community)

Bank of Hawaiʻi is honored to call Hawaiʻi home and to support the island communities where we live and work.

E na‘i i kou pono (Reach your possible)

From saving for your down payment to planning your retirement, we’re here to help you reach your possible.

“ʻAʻohe hana nui ke alu ʻia.”

No task is too big when done together by all.

Mary Kawena Pukui — ʻŌlelo Noʻeau No. 142

ʻŌlelo Noʻeau are Hawaiian proverbs and poetical sayings that embody ancestral wisdom and values passed down by kūpuna (respected elders).

It is the same cooperation, partnership and collective effort represented in this ʻŌlelo Noʻeau which provided the path for Bank of Hawaiʻi’s ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi commercials to be created and shared.

We mahalo nui baby Mila and her ʻohana for welcoming Bank of Hawaiʻi to be part of her lā hānau mua and capture the very special occasion on film.

Bank of Hawaiʻi is also deeply grateful to the Hawaiian leaders and cultural practitioners who guide us with their ʻike and manaʻo (thoughts and insights) and helped make these commercials possible.

Ko mākou wa‘a (Our canoe): Ulu o ka lā

In 2015, we commissioned the building of Bank of Hawaiʻi’s own waʻa (canoe). Its name, Ulu o ka lā, was inspired by ʻŌlelo Noʻeau No. 2870 and our enduring commitment to provide better tomorrows for all.

One year later, Ulu o ka lā was blessed at a beautiful ceremony at Hakipuʻu in Kualoa in Windward Oʻahu – in the same place that Hōkūleʻa launched more than 50 years ago.
