With more than eight million tons of plastic entering our oceans each year, worldwide cleanup efforts such as this aim to not only make a significant impact with trash removal, but also raise awareness about the benefits of caring for our environment and making better choices to eliminate single-use plastics as much as possible.

On O‘ahu, volunteers worked at five beaches on the windward side, including Waimānalo Beach Park, Bellows, Sherwood Beach, Kaupō Bay, Makapu‘u and surrounding areas removing large debris and using sand sifters to clean micro-plastics from the shoreline. In addition to Bank of Hawaii and Hawaiian Airlines, participating community groups included RYSE, the Waimānalo Health Center, Hawaii Job Corps Center, Kinai ‘Ehu, the Waimānalo Neighborhood Board and Hui Malama O Ke Kai.

Bank of Hawaii and Hawaiian Airlines each made a $5,000 donation (for a total of $10,000) to Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii so the nonprofit can continue their shoreline cleanup work throughout the state.

Bank of Hawaii’s enterprise-wide effort included volunteer service projects also on Hawaii island, Maui, Kaua‘i, Guam, Saipan and Koror, and is the largest Community Service Day coordinated by Bank of Hawaii and Hawaiian Airlines.
