    Card Processing Basics:

      Authorization Process

    1. Cardholder presents payment card for goods and/or services.
    2. Merchant swipes card or calls in for authorization. The information is sent to Bank of Hawaii, and from there is routed to the payment card company. The payment card company then contacts the cardholder’s bank to ensure that the desired funds are available. The response is transmitted back through the chain and is delivered to the merchant. If the authorization request was accepted, the transaction is complete; if the request is denied, the customer must present another form of payment. This process is completed within seconds.

      Clearing and Settlement Process

    3. Merchant sends batch of transactions to Bank of Hawaii.
    4. Bank of Hawaii sends the information to the payment card companies, who in turn send the information on to the respective cardholders’ banks. Bank of Hawaii applies a processing fee for this service.
    5. The payment card companies debit the cardholder’s bank for the amount of the transaction minus interchange fees, and credits Bank of Hawaii minus interchange fees. The payment card company also applies an assessment fee for transmitting the data to the respective cardholders’ banks
    6. The cardholder’s bank posts the transaction to the cardholder’s account, and once a month sends a statement to the cardholder. The cardholder then sends a payment to their bank.
    7. Bank of Hawaii credits the merchant’s checking account for the amount of the transactions.
    8. At the first of the month, Bank of Hawaii sends a statement and automatically deducts the appropriate discount fee.

    Understanding Your Fees

    • The Discount Fee - It varies from industry to industry and is comprised of three different components: Processing Fee, Assessment Fee and Interchange Fee. This fee is deducted from your Bank of Hawaii account at the first of every month
    • Interchange Fee - Fee assessed by the cardholder’s bank for maintaining the authorization/settlement infra-structure. This is the largest component of the Discount Fee (about 80%)
    • Assessment Fee - Fee assessed by the payment card companies for routing of information to individual cardholder banks, and for use of Stand-In-Processing (STIP) should the cardholder’s bank be unavailable
    • Processing Fee - Fee assessed by Bank of Hawaii for transmitting authorization requests, and settlement information
